To improve quickness on the pickleball court, one must focus on various aspects of their game. While natural athleticism and genetics can play a role, there are specific techniques and strategies that can enhance speed and agility.

In a recent Pickleball Fire podcast interview with teaching professional Ben Paquette, he shared valuable insights on how to improve quickness on the court. Here are some tips to consider:

Side to Side Movement

While some players may rely on a cross-over step, similar to tennis, it may not be the most effective technique in pickleball due to the fast-paced nature of the game. Instead, try shuffling side to side, similar to racquetball. This lateral movement allows for quick adjustments and agility, enabling you to react swiftly to shots.

Anticipation

Pay attention to the angle, direction, and height of their paddle, as well as their overall strategy. Recreational players, even advanced ones, often give away their shot placement through subtle cues.

By studying these cues, you can anticipate where the ball is likely to go and position yourself accordingly. For example, if players should be targeting each other’s backhand in a rapid-fire rally, be prepared for the ball to come in that direction.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Ben Paquette mentioned that his game significantly improved during his first two years of playing pickleball. However, to reach higher levels of play, he sought advice from professional players. They emphasized the importance of speed, prompting him to lose over 50 pounds.

While weight loss is not a one-size-fits-all solution, maintaining a healthy weight can positively impact your quickness on the court. Excess weight can hinder mobility and agility, so focusing on a balanced diet and regular exercise can help improve overall speed and performance.

By implementing these tips and techniques, players can enhance their quickness on the pickleball court. Remember, each individual’s journey is unique, and it’s essential to find what works best for you. Practice proper footwork, anticipate your opponent’s shots, and prioritize overall fitness to maximize your speed and agility on the court.
