Greetings, fellow pickleball enthusiasts! Today, I want to share with you my personal journey of finding the perfect paddle for my evolving game.
In a previous article, I mentioned that I started my pickleball adventure with the Onix Z5, which served me well as a beginner. However, as I progressed and honed my skills on the court, I realized it was time to explore new possibilities and upgrade to a paddle that would elevate my game to new heights. The Onix Z5, with its solid performance and comfortable feel, provided me with a great introduction to the world of pickleball. Its weight and wide body allowed me to generate power and hit solid shots from the baseline. The distinctive sound it produced, thanks to its Nomex core, added an extra layer of satisfaction to my gameplay. However, as I delved deeper into the sport, I discovered that the Z5 lacked the spin and control I desired for more finesse shots, particularly in the kitchen.
My quest for improvement led me to sign up for a 3-hour clinic, where I had the opportunity to rally with a teaching pro. Prior to the clinic, the pro observed my play with the Z5 and suggested that I try one of the demo paddles he had brought along. Intrigued, I eagerly took hold of the paddle and began my exploration of its features.
The first noticeable difference was the weight. The demo paddle was slightly lighter than my trusty Z5, providing a newfound sense of maneuverability. Its longer and slightly narrower design also caught my attention. However, the most significant distinction lay in the paddle face. Unlike the smooth surface of the Z5, this paddle had a subtle texture or roughness that piqued my curiosity. Could this texture enhance my grip on the ball and improve my overall control?
With the teaching pro by my side, we focused on refining my dinks. By employing proper technique and utilizing the softer paddle, I was able to execute delicate shots with precision, sparing my opponents from any unintended facial encounters. We then shifted our attention to drives from the baseline, where the benefits of the new paddle truly shone. With its increased spin potential, my shots became more accurate, lower, and imbued with a tantalizing topspin that caused the ball to dip and dive unpredictably. It was a game changer!
Before the clinic officially began, the pro enlightened me with a crucial piece of advice. He emphasized that, rather than seeking a power paddle, I should prioritize control and opt for a softer paddle face. This revelation resonated with me, as I witnessed firsthand the immense impact that control and finesse could have on my game.
